EA Calls for Sept 21

Mike Sikorsky called

  1. What typified this dance was the almost total lack of right and left grands and left allemandes. In fact of the 79 returns to home position, right and left grand was used only once and left allemande was used only once. Here is a typical tip segment that goes from home position to home position: sequence diagram. In this he got the dancers back to home position from completed double pass thru formation by having the leaders work as a couple and Clover Left, while the others Partner Traded and Backed out.
  2. Here is another interesting way that he got dancers back to home position: sequence diagram. He got the dancers in a diamond and had the centers of the diamond Explode and Stop while the points did a Star Thru. It appears that he missed a Step to a Wave call near the end.
  3. Another time he had original heads un-"Step to Wave" to get them to their home position
  4. Called Right and Left Grand as the first call from home position and had the dancers promenade home.
  5. Used a bell to signal the end of a break
  6. Called "Any two adjacent girls wearing a red or blue solid top trade". Claimed he verified that only the girls he wanted to trade were so attired.
  7. Nose problem: some dancer's nose is not pointing in the same direction as some other dancer's nose
  8. Called Teacup Chain with dancers half-sashayed. Commented that "the beauty of this call is that you end up where you started. So we should be half-sashayed because that is where you started the call"
  9. Had the ends do half of a Load the Boat. They passed two dancers and stopped just after passing the second one and ended up back to back
  10. Called Track 2 with half-sashayed couples. Women went around the outside and men went down the middle
  11. Called Coordinate with men in positions 1 and 3 of the columns which meant the men ended up in the center of the resulting two-faced lines. Fortunately men turned men so if you didn't know whether you had circulated once and a half at least you could look for a man to trade with. If the men and women were arranged randomly in the columns, dancers that relied on visual cues rather than counting the circulates would be in trouble.
  12. Called Girls Run from T-boned box
  13. Called Swing Thru from left-hand ocean waves. The centers had to trade first since they were holding right hands
  14. Called Spin Chain and Exchange the Gears but turn star 1/2. This meant the ends that were leaders led the exchange instead of the centers that were leaders. When called it, it was the men that lead the exchange. They ended up in the middle holding lefts with each other.
  15. Called Load the Boat from inverted lines, centers facing in. Note that the centers do not Pass Thru too far; the end formation is t-boned lines rather than a square.
  16. Called Load the Boat from t-boned lines with ends facing out. sequence diagram
  17. . Note that this tip segment went from a double pass thru formation to home position in one move and a back up.
  18. Called Walk and Dodge from t-boned boxes. The leaders dodge, trailers walk.
  19. Called Crossfire from inverted lines. Ends in right-hand ocean waves. This is an application of the Same Position Rule, traders and folders are going to end up in the same spot so they form right-hand mini-waves
  20. From a left-handed wave he called "recycle left-handed." All that meant was the flow was counterclockwise instead of clockwise as it is when recycling from a right-hand ocean wave. But in both cases the leader crossfolds and the trailer follows.
  21. Called Coordinate from 3 and 1 lines. The Same Position rule causes the ends and centers to form a mini-wave when they met in the same spot after circulating once and a half.
  22. Called Wheel and Deal from tidal lines. This was hard even though each line did the same thing that was done if the lines were parallel instead of being side by side in a tidal wave.

EA Calls for Aug 24

Tom called.
  1. Slide Thru and then Roll twice
  2. Load the Boat can be fractionated. The four parts are
    1. ends pass first dancer, centers pass thru
    2. ends pass second dancer, centers face out
    3. ends pass third dancer, centers partner trade
    4. ends face in, centers pass thru
Between c and d, the centers are in a wave and they can be told to do something with it. It is also possible to arrange the dancers so that a Right and Left Grand can be called from a Load the Boat that will return the dancers to their home positions. See sequence diagram
  3. If Follow Your Neighbor is called from a box, the trailers Cast Off 3/4 and the leaders Fold toward the adjacent trailer and Roll. This is true even for t-boned boxes: Taminations.
  4. After doing a Dixie Style to a Wave, the flow makes it natural to call Slip the Clutch and the end dancers and their partners let go of hands and continue moving with the flow.
  5. A Chase Right is essentially a circulate twice clockwise in a box with the dancers being chased initially turning back to allow it to happen, e.g. from mixed t-bones.
  6. A wave can be formed by the chasers in a Chase Right with the chased finishing normally. From this position an Extend will create ocean waves and the sequence Cast Off 3/4, Walk and Dodge, and Cloverleaf will result in a double pass thru formation. See sequence diagram
  7. Also see sequence diagram for examples of calling Scoot Back and Follow Your Neighbor in the middle of a Chase Right.
  8. Called nine consecutive Slide Thrus: sequence diagram
  9. Consider the effect of half-sashayed couples on Star Thru. Taminations shows that calling Star Thru from a normal eight chain thru formation results in lines facing in. But calling it from a half-sashayed eight chain formation results in lines facing out: sequence diagram.

EA Calls Aug 17

Tom Manning called.

  1. Worked on Crossfire from these formations
    1. two-faced lines (the usual formation)
    2. tidal two-faced line
    3. lines facing out
    4. lines facing in
    5. inverted lines, centers facing out
    6. inverted lines, centers facing in
  2. Did not do Crossfire from facing diamonds
  3. Zoom is usually called from a double pass thru completed formation. Other possibilities include
    1. completed double pass thru
    2. columns
    3. t-bones
    4. centers zoom from columns
    5. ends zoom from two-faced lines
    6. points zoom from diamonds
    7. In all cases it is a 4 dancer call done in a box where the trailers step forward and the leaders walk in a full circle, turning away from the center point, and ending up on the spot of the trailing dancer.
  4. Played with diagonal lines of 3:
head man take both your corner and your partner, go forward and back (will be on a diagonal)
you six pass thru (still on a diagonal)
    u-turn back
"side man take both your corner and your partner, go forward and back
(The side men are taking the ladies from the head men.
The head men devoid of companionship turn to face the center of the set.
Not sure how they know to do this)
forward and back (to establish the diagonal lines?)
    "you 6 pass thru
    u-turn back
swing your corner and promenade (dancers end in home position)

Evidently it was natural for the lines of three to be diagonals and for the head men to face in when it was time for the side men to make diagonal lines of three.
  5. Do Paso uses arm turns and ends with a Courtesy Turn if no other instruction is given.
  6. Made sure that boys got a chance to be the casters in Fan the Top
  7. Called a normal Swing Thru from a Tidal Wave so that each wave of 4 acted independently. Most dancers will do a Grand Swing Thru if not explicitly warned first.
  8. Everybody do the center part of Load the Boat: sequence diagram
  9. Load the Boat has four distinct parts so it is possible to fractionate it: sequence diagram
  10. start from 1/4 tag formation
    ping pong circulate
    boys roll to face
    girls linear cycle
    boys pass thru
end with inverted lines centers facing in

    sequence diagram
  11. Wheel and Deal around a box: sequence diagram.
  12. Can call Fan the Top from eight chain thru formation. Need to step to a wave first. For example,
    box the gnat
    fan the top

  13. Called Tag the Line from a Tidal Line. Each line works independently. Compare with Line of 8 Tag the Line.
  14. Ended with this singing call: sequence call sung to Summer Sounds.

EA Calls for August 3

Jerry Story called.

  1. Called Right and Left Thru from a right-handed ocean wave invoking the Ocean Wave Rule. The ocean waves represent the dancers half way thru their Square Thru. The dancers continue their Square Thru by pulling by and turning toward the center of the set which is the opposite direction that they turn when they do the first trades of a Swing Thru. The handhold in the waves is the first hand of the Square Thru which means the dancers have to do three more to complete the move.
  2. Other calls that could start with an ocean wave because of the Ocean Wave Rule
    1. Dosado
    2. Pass Thru
    3. Pull By
    4. Right and Left Thru
    5. Square Thru
    6. Star Thru
    7. Box the Gnat
    8. Double Pass Thru
    9. Pass the Ocean
    10. Touch a Quarter
    11. Pass to Center
    12. Slide Thru
    13. Turn Thru
    14. Load the Boat
  3. Also called Left Right and Thru from a left-handed ocean wave.Once again the dancers turned in after pulling by in the wave except this time they use their right hand for the next pull by.
  4. Right and Left Thru can also be called from a right-hand ocean wave. Dancers are used to doing this after a Spin the Top.
  5. Think about this: Stop on the third hand of a Square Thru 4 ends in the same position as Square Thru 2 and 1/2. Use Taminations to see this.
  6. Called 1/2 partner Trade instead of Hinge. They are the same thing.
  7. Worked with disconnected diamonds: sequence diagram
  8. Called following sequence
    bend the line
every body square thru 4 but stop on third hand
centers square thru 4 but stop on third hand
    touch a quarter

This ended in a right-hand column: sequence diagram
  9. I was the trailer in a tandem and botched a Peel Off by acting as if I was the leader. This put me in the wrong line (creating a line of 5) and left a gap where I was supposed to be in the line of 3: sequence diagram
  10. Called multiple Half Sashays that put the dancers in a formation that would have happened if couples had Half Sashayed (if there is such a thing)
    starting from a static square
    heads lead right
    circle to a line
    right and left thru
    everybody half sashay
    centers half sashay
    everybody half sashay
    centers half sashay
    everybody half sashay

    sequence diagram
  11. Did something similar with consecutive Rollaways
  12. Strongly recommended that in a Load the Boat the centers momentarily touch hands after the initial Pass Through. A side effect of this is that the square will remain tight.
  13. Called Wheel and Deal from a tidal line. The dancers move exactly as they do when a Wheel and Deal is called from lines facing out except they end in two faced lines instead of a double pass through formation.
  14. Called Crossfire from lines facing out which ends with a wave in the center. Jerry commented that some people want Crossfire to be a 4 dancer call which means that the wave would not be formed (the dancers would end in a double pass through formation). However the definition for Crossfire states the following:
As the centers begin to Trade, the ends Cross Fold. Upon completing their Trade, the centers release hands and step straight forward forming an ocean wave or mini-wave with the dancers they are facing.
  15. Called
    from a static square
    heads swing thru
    sides long pass the ocean
    right and left thru

    sequence diagram
  16. Called
    start from a static square
    promenade don't stop
boys roll back and promenade your corner
    heads wheel around

This demonstrates that the boy determines the headness or sideness of a couple. Once a head girl started being promenaded by a side boy she lost her status as a head.

EA Calls July 27

Jerry Story called.

  1. From an Alamo Ring called boy Run right, boy Run left, girl Run right, boy Run left: sequence diagram. The initial Run right sets the boys moving counterclockwise and the girls moving clockwise and this flow is maintained by all the other runs. It is likely that the caller will always try to maintain the initial flow. Furthermore the Allemande left set the boys in a counterclockwise direction and the girls in a clockwise direction which is probably why the first run called will be either boys Run right as it was here or girls Run left.
  2. Weave the ring called after a Recycle
  3. Interesting Circulate
    starting from static square
    sides right and left through
    sides pass the ocean
    ping pong circulate
    side men roll
    heads recycle
    head men roll
    circulate (walk straight ahead)
    boys trade
    boys roll
    everybody trade
    roll
    pass through
    wheel and deal
    boys swing through

    sequence diagram
  4. Four different kinds of quarter promenades by lead dancers of a completed double pass through formation
    1. single file sequence diagram
    2. couples sequence diagram
    3. reverse single file sequence diagram
    4. reverse couples sequence diagram
  5. Called a Walk and Dodge from lines facing out even though the definition says that the starting formations are Box Circulate and Facing Couples: sequence diagram. It turns out this is a Step and Slide which is an A1 call.
  6. There are flow considerations when calling Walk and Dodge. From the definition:

Be careful when using this call as some calls don't flow well or feel good after a Walk and Dodge (e.g., "Walk and Dodge, Bend the Line" or "Walk and Dodge, Wheel and Deal" are not good body flow for half of the dancers).

    sequence diagram
  7. Called half of a Chase Right: The right-hand dancer does a right face U Turn Back & Box Circulates once (instead of twice). The left-hand dancer follows ("Chases") the right-hand dancer by doing a Box Circulate one position (instead of two).
  8. Not sure how dancers are supposed to square up at the end of this one without the heads facing in and the side ladies doing a U-Turn Back. Perhaps it happens when the dancers bow to their partners: sequence diagram
  9. Called Flutterwheel from Sashayed couples. Men have to play the role the woman normally plays and go bring a woman back. Men go in with right hands and bring the woman back with their left hand.
  10. Called Reverse Flutterwheel from Sashayed couples. Women have to play the role the man normally plays and go bring a man back. Women go in with left hands and bring the man back with their right hand.
  11. Called Separate and Walk Around 3 and Squeeze In: sequence diagram. Do not count the walkers.
  12. This snippet shows that the dancers who are not separating and walking around 3 can be doing something while the others are walking: sequence diagram.
  13. Called the following sequence starting in a eight chain through formation.
wrong way allemande left, allemande left this girl
come back until you find your corner
and do a wrong way right and left grand
    until you find your partner
when you find your partner, box the gnat
    ...

  14. Crazy Circulate (a C2 call)
    Everybody does a Split Circulate
    Centers do a Box Circulate
    Everybody does a Split Circulate
    Centers do a Box Circulate

  15. Crazy Flutterwheel (a C2 call). Notice that when the centers do the flutterwheel, they are half-sashayed.
    Everybody does a Flutterwheel
    Centers do a Flutterwheel
    Everybody does a Flutterwheel
    Centers do a Flutterwheel

  16. Crazy Right and Left Thru
Everybody does a right and left thru
Centers do a right and left thru
Everybody does a right and left thru
Centers do a right and left thru

  17. This sequence of calls aligned the dancers at 45 degrees and then got them back to being parallel to the side walls. In both cases, the dancers rotated 45 degrees by making lines and moving up to the middle and back:

    starting from home position
    heads right and left thru
dixie style to an ocean wave
    boys trade
    left swing thru
the center girls make an arch
side ladies lead dixie style to a wave (through the arch)
    boys diamond circulate
    pick up a girl
lines up to the middle and back
you're on the diagonal, you are on the cattywumpus where you should be, on the 45 degree angle
    right and left through
    pass the ocean
    swing thru
    boys run
    girls hinge
    diamond circulate
    cut the diamond
    bend the line
    pass the ocean
    swing thru
    spin the top
just the center wave spin the top
    swing thru in the middle
    every boy run right
move along, make lines up to the middle and back
everything should be square with the world now because two cattywumpuses equal a straight

    sequence diagram

Tom Manning, Dean Dederman Dance July 29

Tom Manning and Dean Dederman called.

  1. Load the Boat can be the Anything part of an Explode (and Anything) call because any call that can be done from lines facing in can be the Anything part: sequence diagram.
  2. Load the Boat can be fractionated by breaking it into 4 parts: sequence diagram .
  3. Dean combined these two properties of Load the Boat and called the following starting from a right hand ocean wave.
    Explode and Load the Boat
Centers go 3/4, when centers meet face to face), Touch a Quarter
    Same four Walk and Dodge
    Separate Around One, Squeeze In

  13. Called Face Left after a Half Tag: sequence diagram
  14. Had corners recite the following poem to each other
    Rose are red
    Violets are blue
    If this square breaks down
    I'm blaming you.

  15. After a Roll Away creating half-sashayed couples in a static square Dean called "4 men with the right hand chain across and woman courtesy turn man."
  16. Called Ping Pong Circulate from an I formation: sequence diagram
  17. Sequence ending with a heads Face, Grand Square

    ferris wheel (boys in center)
boys sweep a quarter (gave a hint that girls were the sides)
    heads face grand square

    sequence diagram
  18. The usual Follow Your Neighbor has boys as trailer and girls as leaders. Did variations on this, e.g., boys leaders and girls trailers, boy and girl cast off 3/4, left hand waves, right hand waves, etc.
  19. Did a Zoom from columns
  20. Did a Single Circle 3/4 to a wave

EA Calls for July 20

Jerry called.

  1. Fractional swing throughs (from right hand waves)
    1. Swing Thru 3/4: sequence diagram. Ends in diamonds
    2. Swing Thru 3/4 twice: sequence diagram. Ends in ocean waves
    3. Swing Thru 1 and 1/4: sequence diagram. Ends in ocean waves.
    4. Swing Thru 1 and 1/2: sequence diagram. Ends in ocean waves.
    5. Swing Thru 1 and 3/4: sequence diagram. Ends in diamonds.
  2. Called Acey Deucey from lines facing out.
  3. Trade the Wave from right hand waves creates left hand waves and vice versa.
  4. As couples Cast Off 3/4 is different from Everybody Cast Off 3/4. Demonstrated it using two-faced lines. Note that the as couples version is an advanced call.
  5. Called Explode the Line from inverted lines (ends facing in). This is so similar to an Explode the Wave that most dancers probably didn't notice.
  6. Called Crossfire from a Thar after boys ran (forming intersecting two-faced lines): sequence diagram. The instructions were different from last week's: sequence diagram. Last week's seemed more in keeping with the regular Crossfire from two-faced lines.
  7. Interesting sequence
Start with tidal wave, same sex holding right hands
    Grand Swing Thru
    Explode the Wave
Partner Trade once and a half to a tidal wave
    Grand Swing Thru
    Explode the Wave

    Girls Wheel and Deal
    Boys Trade
    Boys Roll
    Girls Square Thru 3
    Boys Pass Thru
Boys Courtesy Turn a girl forming lines facing in

    sequence diagram
  8. Interesting sequence
"boys work as a couple, there are six dots on the floor. Boys there is a dot right ahead of you.
Circulate with boys working as a couple
Hinge with boys working as a couple
    Girls Recycle
Girls Step to a left handed Wave
    Girls Recycle
Boys do a long Wheel and Deal out around the girls

    sequence diagram
  9. Cloverleaf and Roll. Note that only the trailers Roll
  10. Referred to a Wheel and Deal done from two-faced lines as a 4 by 4 Wheel and Deal
  11. Called Scoot Back once and a half. To see what a half a Scoot Back looks like go to Taminations and advance the thumb half way.
  12. If you do a Chase Right from lines facing out you end in right-hand ocean waves. A Chase Left would end in left-hand ocean waves.
  13. From the definition of U-Turn Back: The dancer does an individual about-face turn (180 degrees) in place, turning toward partner unless the body flow dictates otherwise. Here is an example of how body flow can cause both dancers to turn right rather than towards each other: sequence diagram. Mentioned that the advanced call Turn and Deal also follows the same principle.
  14. From facing diamonds had the outer 6 dancers Circulate and then in 2 calls brought everybody home: sequence diagram.
  15. Called Cut the Diamond where the points had to do a partner trade because they were facing in the same direction.
  16. Called Lead Left and Lead Right from lines facing out (not in Taminations). This put the dancers in a position to finish a ferris wheel: sequence diagram
  17. Called Slip the Clutch when dancers were not in a Thar formation: sequence diagram.
  18. Called Ferris Wheel from t-boned couples. Here is the complete sequence: sequence diagram.
