EA Calls for Thursday, Jan 26.

Here is what Tom Manning went over on Thursday, Jan 26. Please feel free to use comments to add any omitted calls.

6:30 - 7:30 group

  1. Started with Dos Paso which most dancers took too much time to remember how to do

  2. Stacked swing-thru, spin the top and slide.

  3. Ping pong circulate from an I formation

     * *
      *
      *
      *
      *
     * *

    Ends move in and form a wave, centers move out and partner trade. Ended like this:

     *        *
      * * * *
     *        *

  4. Half sashay, the girls do a reverse flutter wheel

  5. Only centers chase right

  6. Lots of practice with spin chain the gears, starting from both right hand and left hand waves

  7. Threw in a couple of spin chain thrus and spin chain and exchange the gears just to be sure dancers are listening

  8. Square thru 2 1/2 (or on your 3rd hand, stop). This forms ocean waves

  9. Scoot back from formation where everybody has to step forward and turn 180, nobody rolls

  10. Linear cycle and roll

  11. Boys 3/4 zoom, girls face in ending in box that looks like this:

         ^  <
         > v

    Boys run and roll puts you in a similar configuration

    Then split circulate.

  12. Explode the wave, chase right

7:30 - 9:00 group

  1. Funny box circulate (#11 above)

  2. Explode the wave

  3. Explode the wave and touch a quarter

  4. Explode the wave and right and left through

  5. Explode the wave and partner trade (not with the person you turned to face but with the person next to you)

  6. Trade the wave

  7. Scoot back once and a half from left and right-handed waves

  8. All eight scoot back (those facing in form a star and turn it, those facing out roll

  9. Follow your neighbor both boys and girls had a shot at facing in

  10. Follow your neighbor and spread

  11. Partner trade once and a half, ending in waves

  12. Various extends

  1. Tom called "follow your neighbor" and then gave each couple the option of spreading. This could result in 16 different configurations for each square and 256 configurations (16x16) for two squares. I have forgotten what the next calls were but presumably he got the squares back in order so that a promenade would have everybody with the correct partner. If tag the line is called next followed by everybody facing in, then both squares will be facing lines but there is no guarantee that all couples will be normal. What has to be done so that a promenade will return all couples to their original positions in the square?

    1. I think the trick is this. The caller gets the dancers into a position to do an all eight spin the top. The star turning 3/4 may have dancers of either gender. When partners meet, they swing. The swing puts everybody into the normal position for the promenade home.

  2. Tom also did Explode the Wave from left-handed waves, which I found a bit challenging.

  3. The funny box position in 6:30pm number 11 is called "T-boned".

    Got it!

    T-bone in square dancing seems to be similar to an automobile T-bone accident which is one where the front of one car or truck crashes into the side of another vehicle. Broadside accidents most often occur at intersections when one of the drivers fails to stop at a stop sign or traffic light, or otherwise fails to yield the right-of-way to the other driver.

    So evidently any formation where a dancer could walk forward and bump into the side of another dancer is call a T-bone formation. As you pointed out, this is the case with the funny boxes.

  5. Ralph -- This is phenomenally useful! Great that you have links to Taminations.

  6. I looked at the Tamination diagram for ping-pong circulate, which Tom had gone over this class. It confused more than helped. I see the move as the outside pair on each side step up and form a new wave, while those in the existing wave step out (in the direction they're facing) and partner trade. Simple. It doesn't even "feel" like a circulate this way. But it is interesting to see it the other way as well, where you're moving to a spot. Tom did point this out.

    1. If the wave in the middle is a left hand wave, the ends pass left shoulders which is not a partner trade. The path explanation handles this case.
